| Overview |
Baton is a herbicide selective to grasses that controls many broadleaf weeds in pasture and cereals. |
| General Instructions |
Equipment Apply using well maintained spray equipment that is accurately calibrated to apply 100-300 litres of water/ha for ground spraying and 30-100 litres of water/ha for aerial spraying. Use higher water rates for larger weeds.
First Aid If swallowed do NOT induce vomiting. For advice contact the National Poisons Centre 0800 POISON (0800 764766) or a doctor immediately. If skin or hair contact occurs, remove contaminated clothing and flush skin and hair with running water. If splashed in eyes, wash out immediately with water. If inhaled move the victim to fresh air immediately. Begin artificial respiration if breathing has stopped.
Spillage Wear appropriate protective clothing and prevent material from entering waterways. Sweep up solids without generating dust. Contain liquid spills and absorb with inert material. Dispose of waste safely in an approved landfill.
Transport Do not carry this product on a passenger service vehicle.
Record Keeping Records, as described in the current NZS8409 Management of Agrichemicals, must be kept whenever Baton is used.
Mixing Add two thirds of the required quantity of the water to the spray tank. With the agitation system going, remove the water soluble pack from the outer bag and add to spray tank. Agitate for 3-5 minutes while adding remaining water. Ensure Baton is completely dissolved before spraying.
Cleaning Flush equipment thoroughly with clean water after use. If the spray unit which has applied Baton is to be used for the application of other chemicals to sensitive crops, ensure the unit is completely decontaminated.
Compatibility Baton is compatible with most other agricultural chemicals, including Versatill, Preside, dicamba, paraquat, chlorsulfuron, diuron and atrazine. Baton may be incompatible with some foliar fertilizers, especially where water rates below 50L/ha are used. If compatibility is unknown, make up a small test batch before mixing large quantities. Baton is not compatible with Reaction 9-5-6 or Reaction 14-4-4.
General Comments Baton is damaging to clovers, especially red, suckling and subterranean clover, and plantain and chicory. To minimize clover damage where clovers are actively growing, hard graze to remove as much clover leaf as possible before spraying. Do NOT spray hay or silage paddocks.
After spraying with Baton, poisonous plants (eg ragwort) may become more palatable. Stock should be kept away from the area until the plants have died down.
Baton will control a wide range of pasture weeds. Weeds are best controlled as small seedlings. Use the lower rate on seedlings and the higher rate on larger weeds, or during periods of hardened growth. Do not apply if crop or weeds are stressed. Weed control may be unsatisfactory where low soil temperatures inhibit plant growth. Larger plants and established biennials are often not better controlled with Agritone 720. Some weeds (eg Californian thistle, bindweed) require repeat applications.
To improve control of large thistles, or phenoxy resistant thistles add Versatill? Herbicide at 100ml/ ha. Versatill Herbicide will severely suppress clover growth and clovers may take 6-12 months to recover.
Weeds Controlled:
Baton controls or severely checks the following:
Allseed, apple of Peru, Bathurst bur, bitter cress, black nightshade, burdock, bur medick, buttercups, Canadian fleabane, catsear, charlock, chicory, cornbind, cresses, dandelion, dove's foot, fathen, field bindweed, foxglove, groundsel, hawkbit, hawksbeard, hawkweed, hedge mustard, mouse-ear chickweed, nettles, oxtongue, parsley dropwort, penny cress, pennyroyal, piripiri, plantains, ragwort, red dead nettle, redroot, selfheal, shepherd?s purse, storksbill, thistles, twin cress, vetch, wart cress, wild mustard, wild carrot, wild parsnip, wild radish, wild turnip, willow weed.
Weeds Controlled as Seedlings Only: Cape weed, creeping mallow, cut-leaved geranium, daisies, docks, fennel, spurrey, willow weed.
Baton Does Not Control: Field chickweed, cleavers, grasses, hydrocotyle, stinking mayweed, oxalis, prostrate amaranth, parsley piert, pearlwort, sorrel, staggerweed, stonecrop.
Baton may be used for weed control in newly established pastures where weeds are too large for, or not well controlled by Thistrol Plus or MCPB. Do not exceed 1.5kg per hectare. If red clover was sown do not exceed 1kg/ha. Clover should have at least 3 trifoliate leaves, and pastures must be grazed prior to application to remove clover foliage and minimise clover damage. Apply Baton 3-7 days after the first full grazing. Clover growth will be suppressed for 3-4 months. Application of Baton to ungrazed seedling clovers may result in some plant mortality.
Rainfall within 6 hours following application may reduce effectiveness.
Shelf Life When stored appropriately this product should show no significant degradation for 2 years from the date of manufacture. Contact your supplier for further information about the use of any product that is older than this.
Plant Back Periods 2,4-D has soil activity which may be exacerbated by dry soil conditions. To ensure that susceptible species (e.g. brassicas, grasses, clovers) are not damaged by 2,4-D soil residues, do not plant for 4 weeks after application.
Application Aerial Application: Read Spray Drift Hazard section of this label.
High Volume Spot Treatment: Use 500g/100 litres water with a pressure of 600-800kPa and a No. 4 tip and apply as a fine wetting spray. Spray marker dye can be used to identify treated plants.
Knapsack: Use 50g/10 litres water.

| Resistance Warning |
Naturally occurring biotypes resistant to Baton and other phenoxy herbicides are known to exist. These become more prevalent after many years of continuous use of the product. Species with known resistant biotypes include nodding thistle, giant buttercup and slender winged thistle. To prevent or delay the development of resistant weeds use Baton in tank mixes where appropriate, and/or in rotations with herbicides having a different mode of action against the weed. |
| Safety Directions |
When handling wear eye protection, waterproof gloves, boots and overalls. Do not eat, drink or smoke while using. Remove protective clothing and wash hands and face thoroughly before meals and after work. |
| Storage |
Store in original container tightly closed and in a locked, dry, cool area away from foodstuffs, seeds, and fertilizers. Storage must be in accordance with NZS8409 Management of Agrichemicals. Stores containing 100kg of Baton are subject to signage and more than 1000kg require emergency response plans. |
| Disposal |
Burn empty container in an appropriate incinerator if circumstances such as wind direction permit. Otherwise crush and bury in a suitable landfill. Dispose of product only by using according to the label, or at an appropriate landfill. |
| Precautions |
Toxicity Warning - this substance may be harmful if swallowed, inhaled or absorbed through the skin.
May cause mild skin irritation. Avoid skin contact.
May cause organ damage from repeated oral exposure at high doses.
Corrosive Danger - this product is corrosive and may cause eye damage.
Ecotoxic - Toxic to aquatic organisms with long-lasting effects. Avoid contamination of any water supply with product or empty container. Application to drains, ditches and irrigation channels must only be made when these waterways are dry and at least one month is allowed to elapse before the channels are used to carry water.
- Selective herbicide - very toxic to some plant species
Beware: Spray drift hazard. Apply this product carefully. Spray drift may cause serious damage to other desirable plants. Ensure compliance with relevant regional air management plans.
To minimise the risk of damage from drift of this product, especially where susceptible vegetation is within 0.5km, use low drift nozzles which minimise the production of small droplets (less than 100 microns). Maintain a water rate of at least 30 litres/ha for aerial spraying. Do not add additional wetter unless specified on the label. Preferred wind conditions for spraying are a light constant breeze away from any sensitive crop.
- Toxic to terrestrial vertebrates.
